Earlier this year, DJ Marshmello held a virtual concert inside of the smash-hit video game Fortnite, bringing 10 million concurrent users together. Now, the metal group Korn is taking their shot at the virtual world with a concert set to be held inside the game AdventureQuest.
The band will perform a show inside the worlds of AdventureQuest 3D and AQ Worlds at the Battle Concert Arena. While gamers are focusing on fighting monsters and snatching up loot, they’ll also be able to to enjoy a heavy show by the “Freak On A Leash” singers. Fans can attend the show in the video game on their mobile device or computer. The concert will take place at “sundown” in the game on Tuesday, August 20.
“Get in the most brutal mosh pit ever … and make video game history!” creators Artix said in a statement. “Korn is playing the grand opening of the Battle Concert Arena in the massively multiplayer games, AdventureQuest 3D & AQWorlds. The band will play on stage while you fight monsters, score loot, and hear a new song from Korn’s upcoming album…. The Nothing
“When you create a new AdventureQuest 3D game character, we’ll slide a magical concert ticket into your inventory. Your ticket will allow you to instantly teleport to the special event. At least, it will when the event starts.”
Gamers will have the opportunity to get backstage passes – just like at a real concert – and take a virtual selfie with Korn. Exclusive in-game purchases will also be available like Korn-branded items, the Heavy Metal Mosh Pit armor, and travel forms that let you transform into new monsters from the show.
As we progress more and more into a digital world, it seems more likely that virtual concerts will become more of a norm. While Marshmello broke records for having the biggest turnout in the virtual world, he wasn’t the first to hold a virtual concert, as they’ve been occurring for decades. Second Life first hosted a show for The Royal Liverpool Philharmonic back in 2007, followed by U2 in 2008. Then, Minecraft held “Coalchella” in 2018 and Fire Fest earlier this year.
Metal shows are usually very intense with mosh pits, so it should be interesting to see how the show plays out in the battlefield game.
Korn will be playing in support of their forthcoming record The Nothing, which is due September 13.The record will follow 2016’s The Serenity of Suffering.
